My Favorite Pacific Islands to Visit in 2017

With all their quirky names, unique and exotic cultures, and rare, untamed beauty, the islands of the Pacific Ocean make it almost impossible for you to pick a single destination for your travels. They are all remote, untouched by the modern continental tempo, and they safeguard their own rhythm of life, nurturing their little oases of wilderness and peace.

That’s why I’ve decided to make it even more difficult for you by sharing some of my own experiences that will make you fall head over heels in love with these safe havens of intact nature. You will most likely end up island-hopping or spending your entire pension funds just to have a taste of these captivating Neverlands.

Fiji’s Viti Levu

Home to some of the most alluring beaches in the world, and the largest among all Fiji islands, Viti Levu is the prime example of your dreamland destination that will restore your Zen and restore a positive outlook on life.

I spent full ten days in the coconut palm shades of Natadola beach, with the view of the majestic cliff-side, and my toes soaked in the warm waves of the Pacific and the gentle touch of white, delicate sand. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Moorea

This unrivaled seductress boasts raw, enchanting beauty, and it is tucked away approximately 12 miles northwest of Tahiti. The fierce cliffs overlook the turquoise lagoon, teeming with marine life just waiting for a friendly swim with visitors. To my surprise, even the sharks were curious to meet me!

As one of the largest, most diverse coral reefs in the world, it allows for surreal underwater adventures for true snorkeling enthusiasts. You can spend time with sharks, exotic fish and manta rays, soaking in the sun and relaxing in the ocean breeze and the local culture. Its shores and inland are as majestic as the ocean itself, with stunning scenery all around the island and its incredible rocky summits.

Tetiaroa Island

The epitome of heaven on Earth, this hidden little paradise atoll offers perfect seclusion and it is a natural reserve of exotic birds and breathtaking beaches. Time has stopped on this blissful island, as people there work towards achieving complete energy independence and sustainability.

With its translucent waters, pearl-white sand beaches and magically emerald island, Tetiaroa offers a luxurious stay at the eco-friendly resort named The Brando, in memory of its previous owner, Marlon Brando, who wanted to preserve the island’s heritage and incomparable aviary life. Thanks to its intact nature, I was able to have a glimpse into an idyllic paradise we all want to live in.

Huahine

A serene island with ancient legacy, outstanding scenery and a variety of unique activities, Huahine is a treasured gem among South Pacific islands. Scarcely populated and visited by few tourists, it felt as if I was visiting a deserted island with pristine white beaches and sacred ruins all to myself.

Palm trees surrounding every road and providing perfect shade for sightseeing, along with extinct volcanoes, the remains of ancient Polynesian structures and a friendly world of underwater creatures will all welcome you open arms. Cherished by the locals, blue-eyed eels are considered sacred creatures, and you will have the chance to feed them in the village of Faie. I wasn’t as brave as the local kids that were picking them up, but I was mesmerized by their beauty.

Rarotonga

Exploring the local rainforest, haggling with the local craftsmen over handmade baubles, swimming in the picturesque lagoons and enjoying the traditional music of the natives is what this island is all about. It’s the most densely populated island among the Cook Islands, and it boasts a well-developed tourist infrastructure that allows you to enrich your stay with many exciting activities.

It has rich flora and fauna, hidden corners of wilderness and perfectly welcoming pearly beaches ideal for hours of relaxing, sunbathing and peaceful swimming. You can discover the slow-paced local life by visiting some of their churches, going fishing or taking part in their nightlife beach visits when the locals flock together.

Whether you are looking for a complete Robinson Crusoe experience or an exciting adventure with the native population of the islands, these “off-the-grid” atolls are made for an unforgettable summer vacation you’ll never want to end.

Carefully pick your destination because you will be tempted to prolong your stay or completely move there, as the majestic beauty of these unique places will completely captivate your mind and soul, giving you the perfect getaway from the hectic life of our modern world.
