1. Athirappilly Waterfalls, Thrissur

Athirappilly Waterfalls is situated in Thrissur district of Kerala on the Chalakudy river and is the largest waterfall in Kerala which stands tall at a height of 80 feet. As it is the tallest one in Kerala, the Athirappilly Waterfalls is nicknamed as ‘The Niagara of India’. Bathing under the waterfalls is prohibited and warning signs are kept in the danger areas. Many filmmakers are also attracted towards this waterfalls other than millions of tourists visiting it each year.

Best time to visit:

Athirappilly Waterfalls comes to its glory during the monsoon season (from June-September).

Reaching the spot:

The nearest railway station is the Chalakudy Railway Station which is 19 mi (30 km) west.

The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport which is about 34 mi (55 km) away southwest and 36 mi (58 km) south of the city of Thrissur.

By road, taxis and buses are frequently available from Chalakudy bus terminal to Athirappilly. The road from Chalakudy to Athirappilly covers many villages.

A short drive from there can take you to another waterfall in a place called Vazhachal which is covered with dense green forest and provides shelter to many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna.

2. Munnar, Idukki

The nearest railway station is in Aluva or Ernakulam approximately 87 mi (140 km) away.

The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport which is 68 mi (110 km) away.

By road, you can reach Munnar by buses or taxis. It is a frequent public bus route.

The four main directions from Munnar is the Mattupetty direction, the Thekkady direction, the Adimaly direction, the Coimbatore direction.

3. Periyar National Park (PNP), Idukki

This is a protected area near Thekkady and spreads across the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta. The only entrance into this National Park Is through the Thekkady gate which is in Kumily, Idukki district. The PNP is a Wildlife sanctuary and holds many kinds of endemic and endangered species of flora and fauna. It is notable as an Elephant and as a Tiger reserve. There is a boat ride for a limited number of visitors along the Periyar river which opens at 7:30 in the morning and a

batch holds up to 200 passengers and there are five batches in a day. If you are going to the boat ride, don’t forget to carry a pair of binoculars, or you could hire one from the entrance gate. The boat ride will cost you around 200 INR (3-4 USD) it lasts for around one and half hours. Furthermore, you can spot elephants and many varieties of birds along the ride.

Best time to visit:

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve is one of the wildlife vacation destinations which are open in monsoons too. You can visit Periyar in any season. The most excellent time to visit Periyar is from September to April.

Reaching the spot:

The nearest railway station is in Kottayam which is 70 mi (114 km) away.

By air, the nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport which is at a distance of 125 mi (200 km) and there is the Madurai airport which is mainly a customs airport in the state of Tamil Nadu and is at a range of 87 mi (140 km).

When choosing the road, Kumily is the nearest town and we can get there by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

Panchalimedu is a village which is 32 mi (51 km) away from Thekkady.

Grampi is a tourist spot which is 15 mi (24 km) from Thekkady.

Vandiperiyar is a lush green place with many kinds of plantations and is 12 mi (18 km) from Thekkady.

4. Kovalam Beaches, Trivandrum

Kovalam is a beach town situated at 11 mi (17 km) from Trivandrum. There are mainly three beaches in this town: Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach, Samudra Beach. Among them, the Lighthouse Beach is the famous one. As the name suggests, this beach has a 35- metre tall lighthouse. At night its light makes the beach look glorious.

Best time to visit:

The beach holds an amazing view of both sunset and sunrise. During the sunset, the beach will be crowded and in the morning you can experience a peaceful sunrise.

The nearest railway station is the Trivandrum Central Railway Station which is located about 10 mi (15 km) from Kovalam.

Trivandrum International Airport is the nearest airport with a distance of about 10 mi (15 km) from Kovalam.

By road, we can reach the beaches by taking a bus or a taxi. There are plenty of road transports available.
